- Defeat Michigan Supreme Court Justice Robert Young: Enemy of Workers and Consumers - Justice Robert Young is up for re-election in 2010, and he has racked up a long list of decisions and votes that make his record clear. A former insurance company lawyer, Young is an activist judge who uses his position on the Supreme Court to push his anti-worker, anti-civil rights and anti-consumer agenda, ruling for insurance companies and corporations 80% of the time. We need to send him a wake-up call in 2010 - click here to find out about some of Young's worst decisions.

Obama - The Commemorative Edition" for pickup at the Convention - The November 4th, 2008 election of Barack Obama as the nation's 44th President galvanized a fusion of celebration and information on the pages of African American newspapers from coast to coast. This book attempts to capture that remarkable occasion with a reprinted collection of actual full color front pages from African American newspapers and poetic commentary chronicling an historic event. This beautiful commemorative collection measures 22"x12" and features 72 full color pages with 32 reproductions of front pages.
News from troy City Budget Approval Results in New Hours of Operation for Three Key Venues The Troy Public Library, Troy Museum and Lloyd A. Stage Nature Center have new operating hours as of July 1st as a result of the Troy City Council’s approval at its May 10 meeting of the City budget for the July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011 fiscal year. é The Troy Public Library will no longer be open on Saturdays and will now close one hour earlier on Fridays and Sundays. The Library's new hours will be: Monday-Thursday, 10 am - 9 pm Friday, 10 am - 5 pm Saturday, CLOSED Sunday, 1 - 5 pm é The Troy Museum & Historic Village will be open Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 10 am - 3 pm. Weekend programs will no longer be offered. é The new hours for the Lloyd A. Stage Nature Center will be Thursday & Friday, 10 am-2 pm; Saturday, 10 am - 4pm and Sunday 12 noon - 4 pm. It will be closed Monday-Wednesday. If there are no changes in library funding, it is anticipated that the process of closing the library will begin in January 2011 and the library will completely close on a long term basis by July 2011 Citizens to Save The Troy Public Library is holding a “Save the Troy Library Rally” THIS Saturday, July 10, 10:00am – 1:00pm. For details on this event, please use the link below: http://friendstpl.org/wp-content/uploads/news-pdfs/rally_invite_7-10-10.pdf. Citizens to Save the Troy Public Library will be circulating petitions to put a millage expressly for library funding on the November 2010 Ballot. This new millage proposal would seek to establish an independent Troy Library, with a separate millage which would result in the library no longer functioning as a department of the city. After a great deal of dialogue and research, this appears to be the only means of sustaining an open library in Troy. Your TDC Chair and Vice Chair strongly encourage our members to study this information and offer support to the preservation of a strong library system in our community. If you are not able to attend the Rally this Saturday in front of the Library, we will also have a speaker and printed information on the Library issues at our July 17 picnic. EDITORIAL: UNBELIEVABLE Michigan is playing “monkey see-money do”. Republican State House representative Kim Meltzer introduced a bill (HB 6256) which is very similar to the Arizona immigration law. I emailed my state senator John Pappageorge urging him to oppose this bill. My primary concern is the racial profiling aspect of this law – and because it lacks any effort to hold employers accountable for hiring illegal immigrants. That law and the proposed Michigan bill is all one sided. Well to my surprise – well maybe not surprise, Mr. Pappageorge danced around the whole issue – even told me I should tell Ms. Meltzer what I think (like she could care less what I, not her constituent, thinks!) So Mr. Pappageorge told me nothing – not his opinion – not any argument pro or con. Real leadership – that one! The reduction in services continues! What Troy does affects where I live – in Clawson. We depend on Troy for some services – weekend police dispatching, and I discovered recently, animal control services. Now they won’t even take care of dead animals discovered on your property –you are on your own for disposal. Discover some raccoons in your fireplace or attic – forget it. Call a private contractor. Of course every homeowner is equipped to handle possible aggressive wild animals, or rabid animals – or maybe birds – ya right!!!! The irony here is as we reduce the wildlife refuge surrounding our neighborhoods – we will more and more see wild animals creeping into our neighborhoods. I saw a deer running down the street where I live – just this year. For those of you in Troy who voted against that very modest tax increase – I hope you are plagued with dozens of dead and wild animals invading your household. By the way, those of you Troy residents who voted against any tax increase – and unfortunately those who voted in favor; do not expect to use my library when yours closes. Clawson voted to save its library. In absence of a library, there will not be a reciprocal agreement. And that will go for any of the other sundry libraries in S.E. Michigan in this cooperative agreement. Mr. Pappageorge – want to do something constructive? Then get a Michigan law enacted preventing strawberry growers from using METHYL LODIDE on Michigan grown strawberries. California is considering using this toxic chemical on theirs. Scientist say it will cause cancer, miscarriages, and birth defects. Do not side with the big chemical pesticide industry. MIKE SMITH Clawson |
